What is planning and design
To the left of this writing is a very large building. Whenever a very large building is built, there is a lot of planning and preparation that happens before any construction work is complete.
This may include plans that provide dimensions and a layout of the building. There may also be details about the location and its suitability, materials that are to be used in the construction and the process for the construction.
All of these important things must happen before work can begin on any project that requires building or constructing. In your project, you will be constructing a moving and floating boat. You will need to plan and prepare to do this.

What will we have to consider before beginning the project?
An important consideration when building a boat is that it floats. When discussing materials and the design of our boat, the first consideration is that it must float without sinking. Therefore it will have to be made of materials that allow it to do this.
When we talked about boats in a previous page, we discussed that the ones we looked at were made of either steel, wood or fiberglass. These products are resistant to damage and leaks therefore are appropriate to use when building full size boats.
The boat that you will be building is quite small and will need to be able to be made from everyday materials that can float. How can we do this? Think about what liquid is stored in when it is put in the fridge. What sorts of materials do we store liquid in? Use this information to help write your answers to 'Identifying the problem' on page 7 of your project book.
For this project, you will be given a range of different plastic and certain cardboard containers to use when making your boat. To properly create a plan of your boat you will need to select some materials and determine how you will build your boat. This can be dangerous if you use sharp objects to prepare the materials so you need to ask for help. Ask your teacher to cut it into the shape you would like then write your name on it. Answer the questions on page 8 and 9 of your project book.

Creating a plan
Here is a sketch, or blueprint of what a car would like before being built in a factory. This is the very first step when designing a project.
You have already selected some materials that you will use as the outer shell for your boat. You will begin by drawing a diagram that shows the top view and a side view of your boat that incorporates these materials. You will need to include the balloon and straw that will be used to make the boat move. You also need to include any other features you would like such as a mast, flag or seats.

Think about your boat and how you imagine it could look. Think of different ways you can make it with the materials you have chosen. Talk to the other children and discuss your ideas with each other.
Now you know how you want your boat to look you can draw a design plan similar to the one above. You will use this plan to help you build your boat and evaluate how well you planned the project. Don't forget, draw the base of your boat first then you can add any extra features including the balloon and straw. Draw your plan on page 10 of your project book.
