Fantastic Force: Make it Float
What makes a boat float and move?
What makes a boat float and move?
You can see above this text that there are 3 different kinds of boats. One is a very large boat, the other is a very small boat the third one is a middle sized boat.
Think, Pair, Share: Work with a partner and look at each one and see what you can identify about how these boats look. Are there different features? Are there similar features? Write your answers in your Make it Float project book.

Here are some differences that you may have identified:
- The small boat is made of wood while the others are made from steel or fiberglass.
- Two of the boats are powered by engines while the other one must be powered by a person rowing.
- Although it’s hard to tell, these boats would be used in different places. The small boats may be used in a lake or calm area while the Yacht and shipping boat are meant for the open seas.
Here are some of the similarities you may have identified:
- Each boat has a point at the front. What do you think that could be for?
- Each boat has a wide middle to be able to support the weight of whatever it is carrying.
- Each boat still requires some power to make it move, whether its powered by an engine or whether its powered by a person.
Your Activity:
I would now like you to draw a diagram of a boat. It can be any kind of boat that you want to choose. Before you begin: When we draw a diagram, it can be viewed from different angles such as the top, bottom or side. These views help us to better understand the overall design of our product. For your boat diagram, you will have to divide your page in half and draw both a top view and a side view of your boat. Don't forget to include all of the different parts and label them. To help you out, here is an example diagram of a small boat. Draw your diagram in your Make it float project book. Congratulations! You have just designed a boat all by yourself. |
